Setup Ableton Live on a Windows PC
First of all, download and install PureData and Midi Yoke. Once they are installed, we need to configure your system:
First of all, open Ableton Live, click on ‘Options’ in the menu bar, then click ‘Preferences’ at the bottom of the list:
In the window that pops up, click on ‘MIDI Sync’ in the left hand navigation.
Now click on Input and select ‘In From MIDI Yoke: 1’
Then click on Output and select ‘Out To MIDI Yoke: 1’
And finally, click the ‘On’ buttons for ‘Track’ and ‘Sync’ for ‘In From MIDI Yoke: 1’
Now Ableton Live is ready to receive MIDI signals from PureData and MidiYoke.
Now you need to load up a PureData config file. Each one is unique to the layout you are using on your device.
Luckily, all the layouts available on touchosc.co.uk are packaged with their very own PureData files.
Once you have the PureData file, simply double click and PureData Extended will load up automatically.
Now you need to tell PureData where to send the MIDI Signals.
In the window that pops up, click on ‘Media’ in the menu bar then ‘MIDI Settings.
Now click on ‘input device 1:’ and select ‘In From MIDI Yoke: 1’
Then click on ‘output device 1:’ and select ‘Out To MIDI Yoke: 1’
Phew…. OK things got a bit technical there
Now you’ll have to do that every time you open a new PureData file. Or maybe not….
If you’re up for it, you can add a simple line of code which will tell PureData to do this itself every time you load it.
First of all, click on ‘File’, then ‘Startup’.
In the window that pops up, click on ‘New’ in the bottom right hand corner
Finally, type in -mididev and click ‘OK’
Now every time PureData loads up, it should automatically assign the MIDI output to ‘Out To MIDI Yoke: 1’
Now lets get TouchOSC to talk to your computer over your WiFi network.
